My name is Glynis Jolly. I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. Even though I was a teenager during the ‘Hippy Era’, I had no desire to leave home to hang out at Haighte and Asberry in San Francisco and be high on something. I did agree with some of the new philosophies of the times so I devoted my free time to things like The Walk from Hunger, Earth Day, and rallies protesting the war in Viet Nam. My hobbies at the time were playing the flute, dabbling in painting and writing, snow skiing, and swimming.
It was right after I got out of high school when I became disabled. All the dreams I had flew out the window into oblivion. But . . . I found a new interest that I kept busy with for over 20 years . . . Social Work. Despite the disability, I went to college and was such a natural at social work that after just 1½ semesters, one of my instructors asked me for permission to insert a report I did into a journal that would be available for all at the library. After college, I finally landed a job as a patient representative at the state hospital. I worked in this position for over 10 years and loved it. You have to admit that there is satisfaction in forcing government agencies to pay for hospital bills.
Except for what I did at my job, I did not have any interest in computers until I got married for the second time. My husband was in communications when he was active-duty Air Force. It was my husband who insisted that we needed to buy a PC. I wonder if he regrets that decision now. I never even thought about being ‘online’ until my son and my stepdaughter were grown. The first time clicking on the icon with the two little PCs and hearing the whirl of the phone line connecting was in January of 1999. Within three months, I had found some sites that featured web design information and graphic software. I was feverishly saturated in the process of learning this new world of art. My passion for web graphics lasted about eight years. I would have gone back to playing the flute if I could but the disability just was not going to allow it.
I tried to find a job outside the home for a while but swiftly found out that society had changed and my disability was even more of an obstacle than it had been before. After about three months of searching with no prospects at all, my husband told me to stop looking. We would make ends meet with just his pay. That is when I went back to the PC and started doing a little research on jobs as a writer. Of course, I soon felt that I was not really ready to work as a writer. I did not have any credentials except for that report I did in college.
I searched Google and Yahoo! For ideas that would help me prepare for a part-time career as a writer. That is when I rediscovered blogs. About five months after I came up with the idea of using a blog to brush up on my writing skilled, my stepdaughter sent me the movie DVD, “Julie and Julia”. The idea was already in my head but this movie was uplifting, inspirational, and down right encouraging to me.
So here I am, blogging. Not about food, although I might put a few super simple recipes in. I am blogging about my life and my trials with writing.
